Plea from Gables cyclists unsuccessful at commission meeting (Miami Herald)
A handful of cyclists asked the Coral Gables City Commission last week to
postpone approving an ambitious $3.5 million makeover of dozens of streets
next year.
They wanted city leaders to consider the needs of cyclists and pedestrians,
including adding bike lanes and shared-lane markers or "sharrows" to city
streets before moving forward.
Still, a majority of commissioners passed the project without changing the
timeframe.
"We have to get the work done," said Commissioner Maria Anderson. "There is
ample opportunity to discuss bike lanes and striping."
But local cyclists said the city should have sought more input before voting.
"We appreciate that the streets are being resurfaced," said Robert Ruano, a
resident and one of the organizers of Gables Bike Day. "We are concerned about
how it's being done. There have been no public meetings about this. A lot of
residents don't know this is happening."
Ruano said he found out about Tuesday's vote four days before the meeting. He
asked for a deferral so city staff could meet with cycling stakeholders to
discuss striping for bike lanes.
The street repaving is one of 17 new infrastructure projects that have been
