How large, in square miles, would a solar power panel need to be to replace all imported oil.?
don't sweat the conversion problems (gasoline for cars, etc) Just tell me how many KWH's are needed to replace all the imported oil used as fuel or converted to other fuels. Oil used for petrochemicals, back that out.
Liking your answer so far, B. I figured 100 sq. mi. a few years ago. Transition to electric cars over the next 20 years, using ultracapacitors (maybe) instead of batteries...maybe arrays of ultracapacitors to store energy as well....we'd still need fossil and nuclear power plants, plus wind, water, etc. Conservation as well.
Now, how much does 100 square miles of panels cost at today's lowest prices? How does that compare with $600,000,000,000 per YEAR in foreign oil?
$2/watt....does that equate to $2000/square meter? 3e8 times 2e3 = 6e11?
$600,000,000,000 the cost of one year's imported oil, would build its replacement? Not all the infrastructure or distribution or maintenance, just build...????

8700 e12 Wh/yr x 1 yr / 86400 hr = 0.1 e12 W-hr/ht = 1e11 watts
1e11 watts / 1000 watts/sq meter = 1e8 sq meter
1e8 sq meter = 37 square miles.
BUT that 1000 watts/sq meter number is when the sun is shining and straight over head., so multiply the number above by at least 3, perhaps 5.
So 200 square miles.
But how are you going to store the energy for when the sun is not shining? or get it to the automobiles? Or from the sunny parts of the country to the not-so sunny parts?
